"Daisy Files" Say What?

02/12/2011

Daisy, as most of you know, is our livestock guard dog.  She keeps a close eye on all of the happenings out in the barn and pastures.  We've come to know her many different barks.  She has a bark that means, "I'm on patrol."  A different bark that is a warning to something or someone within the vicinity of her pastures.  She has a bark that simply means, "hello." And of course, a bark combined with a growl that means "Danger! All Hands On Deck!"  One afternoon two summers ago, Daisy gave out a bark that was new and different.  Not only did it sound different, but she was barking inside the barn.  That was a very unusual place for her on a nice summer afternoon.  I went out to investigate because I was more curious than alarmed at this new bark.  Upon walking in the barn door, Daisy promptly got behind me and started pushing me across the barn.  Weighing in at 120 lbs, Daisy had no problem moving me.  She pushed me all the way across the barn, to the back door that looks out on the moms and cria's pasture.  Now that she had me where she wanted me, she just continued to bark and whine.  It finally dawned on me that I should look out in the pasture instead of focusing on Daisy.  Out in the back part of the pasture was one of our moms with her head and upper body down on the ground and her rear end up in the air.  Something was wrong.  I went out to investigate and found that she was in the process of having a cria.  I didn't even know that she was in labor!!  The cria was born without any drama and both were brought into the barn safe and sound.  Thanks to Daisy, CnL's Nueve was born.
